YOGA

 

What is YOGA?

Yoga originated in India, and the Sanskrit translation literally means 'Union'. Although to most western eyes it would appear to be nothing more than a series of slow stretching movements, it is actually a whole way of life developed thousands of years ago. It is not a religion, but more a science of life which promotes health of mind, body and spirit. Ancient 'Yogi's' prectised meditation to try to join their innner spirits with that of the universe and hence reach 'enlightenment'.

Today most western practisers of Yoga focus on the Yoga postures and movements in an attempt to address problems created by stress, tension and bad posture. Yoga is very effective at reducing stress and relieving tension throughout both the mind and the body, and many would say leaves the spirit renewed and calm.

 

What does YOGA feel like?

Hathayoga is the most popular style of Yoga taught and practised in the west. Practising Yoga frees up physical tension in the muscles and has a calming effect on the mind, it leaves the person feeling relaxed and yet energised at the same time. As breathing is a key element to Yoga, the sedative and balancing qualities that practise bring are thought to be beneficial in boosting the immune system and enhancing the homeostatic mechanisms throughout the body.

It is important to stop the Yoga movement if you feel pain, dizziness or nausea.

 

What can YOGA be used to treat?

YOGA can be used to treat stress, tension, problems with posture and some back pain conditions, check with your Medical Doctor before starting a course of instruction.
